As part of my visual design class's project, I proposed an idea to sell my design of postcard on the street. I know it sounds like a really terrible idea but I still curious to test it out in public with New York's cold weather. Initially I thought it would be pretty easy. After I stick my postcards on a paper board and put it onto my trolley, I got pretty nervous and self conscious. It actually takes me more courage to put myself out as a seller on the street. I pushed my little trolley twice in Union Square. Not surprisingly, not many people stop to look at it. Only one kind lady analyze it carefully and buy one eventually. But something unexpected happened. There are some people come and talk to me. One guy talked to me about his favorite arts, collection. One homeless person with scars all over his faces came and talked to me. I was scared in the beginning, but he turned out to be a friendly guy and looked at one of my postcards closely. After he read through the words printed on the cards, I saw there is some tears in his eyes. I don't know what he has been through in his life but it made me feel a bit sad after watching him walking away. Five minutes before I decided to leave my selling spot, a Chinese lady bought my card because she was lost on the street and did not know how to speak English, I showed her direction in Chinese. Another experiment I have done is in the subway station. When I parked my trolley on the subway, I didn't really market it at all. It was a good opportunity for me to observe people. Most of people try to avoid me or looking at me completely. Or maybe just because they are way too focus on their phones. None of cards got sold on the subway. But I met a few nice people who offer their help to move my trolley up to the stairs, or pick up my postcards when the wind blowed them away.
After this selling experiment, I probably would never sell my design on the street again? I suppose. But it is still an interesting and funny experience that I would like to share with other people.
